Abstract

The quality of soft-shell crabs is influenced by the cultivation method, especially the molting stimulation method used. The aims of this study was to investigate the effect of feeding enriched with herbal extracts in inducing growth and molting of mud crabs in relation to the development of animal-friendly molting stimulation methods. The herbal extract (Vitomolt®) used was a combination of mulberry leaf extract (Morus alba), Temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), and Temukunci (Boesenbergia rotunda) fermented with Lactobacillus casei. There were 6o crabs weighing 100 g – 110 g and carapace width 7.1 cm – 7.7 cm were used in this study. The study consisted of five treatments of feeding frequency with vitomolt (FV), namely: feeding without Vitomolt (NV) or control (A), one day of FV administration per weeks (B), 2 days of PV administration per weeks (C), 3 days of FV administration per weeks (D) and 4 days of FV administration per weeks (E). The dose of herbal extract in the feed is 100 mL per kg of feed (trash fish). The results showed that the frequency of FV administration had an effect on absolute growth (P<0.05) and specific growth rate (P<0.05). Although the ANOVA showed that the frequency of FV administration had no significant effect for molting, but molting only occurred in crabs with PV treatment, while in the control there was no molting. The best frequency of administration is between 2 and 3 days of FV feeding per week. The results of this study illustrate that the use of herbal extracts can be used as an alternative method to stimulate growth and molting in soft-shell crab cultivation that is friendly to the environment and animals (animal welfare).
