Abstract
Discus fish (Symphysodon sp.) is one of the most popular ornamental fish species and has a high economic value. Its distinctive body shape, along with its diverse patterns and colors, are the main attractions of this species. However, discus fish are known to be highly sensitive to water quality, making them vulnerable to disease when water parameters are not optimal. Consequently, discus fish are considered challenging to breed in captivity due to frequent failures during spawning and egg hatching stages. This research aimed to investigate an alternative breeding technique for discus fish using an egg-lifting system combined with Emolyn solution containing methylene blue. The research was conducted at a hatchery located in East Jakarta, from December 2024 to May 2025. The method employed an observational study with two replications and descriptive analysis supported by visual documentation. The treatment involved transferring fertilized eggs to a hatching container containing Emolyn solution until hatching occurred, followed by rearing the larvae using foster parents. Observed parameters included the spawning process, egg handling, egg development, fecundity, fertilization rate, hatching rate, and survival rate. The results showed an average fecundity of 326 eggs, a fertilization rate of 67%, a hatching rate of 83.7% (resulting in 311 larvae), and a survival rate of 37% (105 larvae). The treatment yielded optimal results in terms of egg production, fertilization, and hatching rates.
